Rwanda Gatare
Producer: Gatare
Region: Nyamasheke, Southern Province
Process: Washed
Varietal: Bourbon
Rwanda is blessed with ideal coffee growing conditions - high altitude, regular rainfall and volcanic soils. Add an abundance of Bourbon and you can see why we love this origin!
The coffees from Rwanda often have wine-like characteristics and this lot has wonderful stone fruit sweetness with plenty of spice.
Our tasting notes: Stone fruit, vanilla and spice with a creamy finish. A super sweet, immensely quaffable coffee!
The vast majority of Rwandan coffee is produced by smallholders, there are thought to be around half a million. Many of these farmers have parcels of land that are often not much larger than a hectare. While coffee is grown in most parts of the country, there are particularly large concentrations along Lake Kivu and in the southern province.
Rwandan smallholders organise themselves into co-operatives and share the services of centralised wet-mills, or washing stations as they are known locally.
This lot has been sourced from Gatare, one of the oldest washing stations in the country. Gatare has a long reputation for quality, placing in the ‘Cup Of Excellence’ competition many times.
