We’re thrilled to return to Uganda and The Coffee Gardens for a second year. This micro-lot is from a group of farmers based in and around Buwobodeya village, Bukyabo Mountain.

ABOUT

We return to The Coffee Gardens for a second year to share this carefully prepared micro-lot.

This season’s selection has a slightly different taste profile; still plenty of clarity and sweetness in the cup but the coffee has a little more body - we’ve found it allows for a wider range of brewing possibilities. 

Tasting notes of fig and plum, with chocolate and dark toffee on the finish.

The coffee cherry we’ve selected had a special preparation: After the pulp and soak, the harvest went through a signature 40 hour fermentation, using filtered mountain water. The additional processing steps help showcase the wonderful qualities of the coffees form this area of Uganda.

COUNTRY OF ORIGIN - UGANDA

As an origin with so much potential, if processed well, the quality of Ugandan coffee can be incredible. 

With very few washing stations in the country, the majority of coffee is home processed - making up 85-90% of Ugandan production. About 70% of this is processed as natural.  

With home processing farmers dry their own cherries, often on plastic or tarp. If the coffee is washed, they use a small and simple hand pulper. The inconsistent and low quality of the coffees processed in this way mean they are mostly sold for unsustainably low prices.

Kyambogo Village Micro-processing Station

Buwobodeya was processed at The Coffee Gardens washing station at Kyambogo Village - it shows us just how good Ugandan coffee can be.

To elevate and showcase the growers' hard work the station is equipped with motorized Penagos pulping machines, lots of fermentation tanks, solar dryers, cherry compost pits and water treatment and purification systems.

The station is accessible to the local farmers and acts as a support hub - The Coffee Gardens have several social and environmental projects within the local community where they're based.

Projects include; funding free surgery for children at the CURE Children’s hospital of Uganda, upgrading sanitation at the local school (improving the facilities for around 2500 school children) and protecting the water springs used by the more remote highland communities they are working with.

MAKING AN IMPACT

By creating incentives to produce higher quality products the farmers involved with The Coffee Gardens are increasing their incomes. The goal: to create a thriving business that offers farmers a clear path out of poverty.

The Coffee Gardens was founded back in 2017 by Dana Siedem, Shakeel Padamsey and Michael Mugisha.

Their combined skill sets cover everything form coffee production and economics to environmental and educational development work with the United Nations in Ethiopia and East Africa.
