ABOUT

Norman Mukuru has been in coffee his whole life.

The ‘Coffee Yard’ brings together all of his knowledge and understanding - with a reputation for high quality naturals it’s a place where amazing coffees are carefully curated and processed.

Norman’s working with our longtime partners in Uganda, The Coffee Gardens. We have always sourced washed coffees from this region but when we heard about this project - and tasted the samples - we were excited to bring some back here to the roastery.

Muki is an abbreviation of Norman Mukuru and Maria Kirya’s names - the team who prepared this microlot for us. We were looking for something that was boozy, sweet and balanced - we’re really happy with the results and excited to start this new collaboration.

COUNTRY OF ORIGIN - UGANDA

As an origin with so much potential, if processed well, the quality of Ugandan coffee can be incredible.

With very few washing stations in the country, the majority of coffee is home processed - making up 85-90% of Ugandan production. About 70% of this is processed as natural.

With home processing farmers dry their own cherries, often on plastic or tarp. If the coffee is washed, they use a small and simple hand pulper. The inconsistent and low quality of the coffees processed in this way mean they are mostly sold for unsustainably low prices.

'The Coffee Yard'

Norman Mukuru is a coffee guru with decades of experience. In the flatlands approaching the foothills of Mt. Elgon he has established The Coffee Yard, a huge centre for coffee drying with a formidable reputation for high quality naturals with a diverse range of cup profiles curated for individual clients' specific preferences.

For the past several years, The Coffee Gardens and Norman Mukuru have been working closely together to raise the quality of coffees from Mt. Elgon.

MAKING AN IMPACT

By creating incentives to produce higher quality products the farmers involved with The Coffee Gardens are increasing their incomes. The goal: to create a thriving business that offers farmers a clear path out of poverty.

The Coffee Gardens was founded back in 2017 by Dana Siedem, Shakeel Padamsey and Michael Mugisha.

Their combined skill sets cover everything form coffee production and economics to environmental and educational development work with the United Nations in Ethiopia and East Africa.

Dana and Shak visited us at the roastery in 2023 and we have been supporting their work through the purchase of these wonderful coffees ever since, read more about their visit and the project here.
